*Actress Tatyana Ali is reflecting on a deeply distressing moment in her life, revealing new details about the birth of her first child and how it continues to shape her perspective today. Speaking on Danielle Fishel’s Pod Meets World podcast, she described the 2016 delivery of her son Edward as a frightening and life-altering experience.
During the birth, Ali said she was physically restrained by medical staff and described a moment that left her shaken. “I mean, I’ll be real with you: They pushed him back inside me,” she said, recalling that her baby had already begun crowning, E! Online reports. She further clarified that the action was “not a real procedure,” noting inconsistencies in her medical records that failed to explain how the situation changed so drastically.

“In my records, it shows that [Edward] goes from the lowest station—I saw his hair, I touched his hair—to the highest station, and it doesn’t say how that happened,” she explained.
“It’s an incredibly dangerous thing that they did,” Ali said, and added, “They could have snapped his neck. But this is after hours of them holding me down, not allowing me to move.”
Despite having what she described as a healthy pregnancy, Ali said her birth plan “wasn’t followed,” emphasizing that “All of that changed once we got into the hospital.”
Following the delivery, her son Edward experienced complications that required care in the neonatal intensive care unit. Ali shared that he struggled with basic functions in his first days. “He couldn’t pee on his own for a long time, about five or six days.” She also recalled a pediatric specialist who connected these issues to the nature of the birth, saying, “I saw what happened during your birth, the things that resulted in this emergency C-section… I think the traumatic nature of his birth is what is causing this.”
Now a mother of two with husband Vaughn Rasberry, Ali says the experience has pushed her toward advocacy. She highlighted broader concerns, stating, “Black women are three to four times more likely to die in childbirth.” Reflecting on her decision to speak out, she added, “I’m supposed to say something because all the people I’m talking to, no one puts a mic in their face.”
