*Tashera Simmons is opening up about the emotional toll of her marriage to DMX, explaining why she ultimately had to stop trying to “save” him.
Speaking on the March 18 episode of “Angie Martinez IRL,” she reflected on their years together and the challenges that shaped their relationship. Simmons was married to the rapper, born Earl Simmons, from 1999 until their divorce in 2014. Their relationship spanned a significant period of DMX’s life and career. In April 2021, the artist died at age 50 following a cocaine-induced cardiac arrest that resulted in brain failure.
As Complex reports, during the conversation, Simmons shared her belief that DMX died “unhappy” and with a “broken heart.” She also spoke about the emotional strain she endured, saying, “I was so broke from a lot of things that happened with us in the marriage.” Despite the difficulties, she explained she remained in the relationship for years because of her deep understanding of him.

Her perspective shifted over time as the situation became increasingly unhealthy. Simmons acknowledged, “I wanted to save Earl,” noting that she could see the direction he was heading. She described how the marriage was affected by his infidelity and the expansion of his family beyond their relationship.
The former couple share four children, and DMX went on to have a total of 15 children with multiple women, including 11 outside of his marriage to Simmons. She recalled an earlier conversation in which he spoke about his own upbringing, saying he had grown up in a family with “three different fathers,” and expressed a desire to build a stable household of his own.
Simmons said she had hoped to see him “happy and healed,” but that outcome never came. Their story may soon be revisited in the upcoming podcast “Look Thru My Eyes: Becoming DMX,” produced by 50 Cent and hosted by Jadakiss.
