*A social media discussion about The Jackson 5 recently prompted an emotional response from Taj Jackson, who spoke candidly about the personal impact constant comparisons to Michael Jackson had on his father, Tito Jackson.
The conversation began after an X user asked why the other members of the legendary group never achieved the same level of success after Michael launched his solo career. Taj reposted the message and shared a deeply personal reflection about the emotional consequences of living in the shadow of one of music’s biggest stars.
“I’ll answer since this is a very sensitive subject to me,” Taj wrote. “Imagine since you were a teenager being told by everyone that you are worthless without your younger brother and you should thank him for everything you have. That’s exactly what my dad had to deal with his whole life. He told me that personally on multiple occasions. What do you think that does to your self esteem and life?”

Taj, a singer, producer, and founding member of 3T alongside his brothers Taryll and TJ Jackson, is the nephew of Michael Jackson. His comments come amid renewed public interest in the Jackson family following the box office success of the biopic “Michael,” which revisits the group’s rise and the pressures surrounding their fame.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson as Michael Jackson, the film traces the family’s early years in the late 1960s as Joe Jackson pushed his sons – Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael – through demanding rehearsals and performances before their eventual breakthrough with Motown Records. The movie has become one of the most successful music biopics ever released, earning more than $577 million globally within three weeks.
While the film dramatizes the family’s rise to fame, the Jackson brothers’ real-life success permanently reshaped pop music history. Beginning their musical journey in Gary, Indiana, the group evolved from The Jackson 5 into The Jacksons, ultimately selling more than 150 million records worldwide and earning induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Michael Jackson later became an international superstar through solo releases including “Thriller,” but Taj’s comments offered a more personal perspective on the emotional toll that level of fame may have had on other members of the family behind the scenes.
