*Lionsgate has officially unveiled the first trailer for “The Long Walk,” the highly anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s first novel, and it’s as intense as fans hoped. Directed by “The Hunger Games” visionary Francis Lawrence, the upcoming thriller is set to hit theaters on September 12.
“The Long Walk” plunges viewers into a brutal dystopian competition where 100 teenage boys must walk continuously without stopping. The consequences are fatal: pause for too long, and you’re eliminated, permanently. The newly released trailer offers a harrowing first look at this psychological and physical endurance test, with eerie tension and emotional stakes that promise to stay with audiences long after the credits roll.
Drawing from the haunting tone of King’s early storytelling, the film stars an ensemble cast led by Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Charlie Plummer, and Roman Griffin Davis, with Judy Greer and Mark Hamill rounding out the cast. The screenplay is penned by JT Mollner, with production from Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, Francis Lawrence, and Cameron MacConomy.
The film’s official poster, also released today, is a direct nod to the original 1979 book cover, an evocative image that mirrors the story’s grim, relentless march.
“The Long Walk” marks a significant cinematic moment for King fans, finally bringing to life one of his most unsettling and thought-provoking tales. With Lawrence’s deft direction and the emotional weight of its young cast, this film aims not only to thrill but also to ask: how far would you go to survive?

King’s “The Long Walk” may have deeper roots in the era it was written. Though not intentional, the story reflects the grim reality faced by young men drafted into the Vietnam War with no promise of returning home.
Speaking to Vanity Fair, King acknowledged the connection, saying, “You write from your times, so certainly, that was in my mind. But I never thought about it consciously. I was writing a kind of brutal thing. It was hopeless, and just what you write when you’re 19 years old, man. You’re full of beans and you’re full of cynicism, and that’s the way it was.”
