*As “Squid Game” returns for its highly anticipated second season, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk shared an exciting preview of what’s to come from grim new games and characters.
With the premiere on Netflix set for December 26, Season 2 picks up right where the shocking first season left off, continuing the story of Gi-hun, who faces the consequences of his jaw-dropping decisions. Hwang shares how his evolving dystopian vision of a deadly game, where players gamble their lives for a life-changing prize, has become even more relevant as society grapples with its challenges, making the series’ terrifying premise feel all too real.
“I want to highlight the theme of taking sides,” Hwang told THR about the major motif for season two.
“In Korea these days, we’re seeing much worse conflict between the elderly and the younger generation. And you see demarcation everywhere. There’s no room for debate, only hostility. So I was inspired by the direction the entire world is taking.”
Hwang said he was “inspired by the sheer fact that everywhere you turn, people are drawing lines, whether it’s by generation, class, religion, ethnicity or race.”

He added, “I wanted to tell a story about how the different choices we make create conflicts among us and to open up a conversation about whether there is a way to move toward a direction where we can overcome these divisions.”
Season one of “Squid Game” attracted 111 million viewers within its first 17 days of release nearly three years ago, and its highly anticipated second season will be available on Netflix starting December 26. A third and final season is scheduled for 2025. Given the global response, extending the series was an obvious choice.
“I don’t know if it was me or Netflix that said it first,” said Hwang. “Everything just came very naturally. Because [all the fans] I met at the time thought there was definitely going to be a season two, I also got to thinking, ‘OK, we are going to do a second season.’ ”
“Squid Game” remains Netflix’s most popular title of all time and is considered one of the most anticipated returning shows globally.
The Golden Globes has recognized its success, as “Squid Game” Season 2 has already been nominated for Best Drama Series at the upcoming awards.”
