*“Squid Game” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said he is “sick” of the popular Netflix series and his surprising remarks come as the second season is set to premiere this month.
“I’m so exhausted. I’m so tired. In a way, I have to say, I’m so sick of Squid Game,” Hwang told Variety in a new interview. “I’m so sick of my life making something, promoting something. So I’m not thinking about my next project right now. I’m just thinking about going to some remote island and having my own free time without any phone calls from Netflix…Not the ‘Squid Game’ island.”
Season one garnered 111 million viewers within its first 17 days of release nearly three years ago, with its second season coming to the platform on December 26. A third and final season is scheduled for 2025.
Variety reports that the new series picks up right after Season 1’s finale when Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) abandons his plans to go to the U.S. and instead returns to the deadly game with new contestants. The official synopsis states: “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport. Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway.”
The description continues, “But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.”
“I do have a lot on my shoulders, but I’ll make sure it’s worth the wait,” Hwang told Netflix in 2023.
“Season 2 explores how Gi-hun follows through on his words after leaving the airport,” said Hwang in a new behind-the-scenes featurette that revisits Season 1. “Gi-hun’s endeavor to find out who these people are and why they do what they do is the core story of Season 2.”
Lee Jung-jae added: “In Season 1, there was room to show glimpses of Gi-hun’s various personalities, such as his optimistic nature and positive energy. This time, the focus was on his determination.”
