As Game Pressure reports, Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, envisions augmented reality (AR) as the next major platform after smartphones. At the 2024 Connect event, he introduced the Orion AR glasses prototype, expected to launch in 2027, which will enable users to interact with 3D holograms, control apps, and communicate using voice, gestures, and eye movements.
Since 2014, Meta has invested over $80 billion in AR and VR technologies, underscoring its long-term commitment. The company’s Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, featuring a 12MP camera, built-in speakers, and an AI assistant capable of tasks like translation, offer a glimpse of this future. Zuckerberg predicts that by 2030, AR glasses will surpass smartphones in everyday use.
Musk takes a more radical stance, imagining a world where Neuralink’s brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) make smartphones obsolete. Founded in 2016, Neuralink is developing implants that let users control technology with their thoughts. Two people have already received implants, primarily aimed at helping those with paralysis or neurological conditions.
Musk’s grander ambitions include telepathy and AI-enhanced cognition, though privacy concerns and the tech’s early-stage development spark skepticism. Questions linger about data security and Neuralink’s transparency regarding risks.

In contrast, Apple CEO Tim Cook remains confident in the smartphone’s future. The iPhone 16, launched in September 2024, boasts advanced AI features, reinforcing Cook’s belief that phones will evolve alongside technologies like AR, not be replaced. Cook sees wearables and AR as enhancements, not alternatives, to the smartphone’s central role in everyday life.
As Musk and Zuckerberg champion disruptive technologies, Cook’s more grounded perspective underscores a deeper divide over the future of personal tech.
