*A North Carolina police officer lost his job this week after doorbell camera footage captured him attacking a woman during an arrest, setting off public outrage and a street protest in the city where it unfolded, WBTV reports.
The incident occurred on Friday, May 29, in Shelby, North Carolina. The woman, identified as Cherie Moore, can be seen in the footage grabbing the officer’s arm before he pinned her to the ground and delivered multiple blows. Moore did not appear to fight back. A second officer attempted to intervene, telling the first officer, “Let go, let go, I got her, I got her, I got her,” but the strikes continued despite the warning.
Moore can be heard in the video telling officers she was off her medication and needed mental health support. She was subsequently charged with breaking and entering, resisting arrest, and assault on a government official, according to jail records.

Shelby Police Chief Brad Fraser announced the officer’s termination Saturday morning, confirming that internal investigation findings had been handed over for an independent criminal review by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations.
Fraser released an initial statement Friday as the footage spread across social media. “The actions taken by one officer during that encounter are disturbing and inappropriate. A second officer can be seen intervening to stop those actions,” he said, adding that inappropriate use of force “is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
“We understand the concerns this incident has caused within our community and want to assure the public that this matter is being taken seriously. The Shelby Police Department remains committed to professionalism, accountability, and maintaining the trust of the community we serve,” Fraser added.
Demonstrators took to the streets in downtown Shelby Friday evening, gathering to denounce the officer’s conduct and push for accountability from the department.
The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office also issued a statement confirming its deputies had no involvement in the incident.
