*Acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler is stepping into the world of television with an ambitious new project: a reboot of the iconic sci-fi series “The X-Files.”
Fresh off the success of his horror-action film “Sinners,” Coogler has confirmed that bringing “The X-Files” back to life is now his top priority.
Speaking on Last Podcast on the Left, the “Black Panther” director gave a glimpse into his excitement about reimagining the cult series.
“I’m working on X-Files. That’s what’s immediately next,” Coogler said. “I’ve been excited about that for a long time… some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f*cking scary.”
Originally debuting in 1993, “The X-Files” became a television phenomenon, blending paranormal mystery with science fiction and psychological suspense. Coogler, who has proven his ability to navigate complex genre storytelling, seems poised to bring a fresh perspective to the franchise.
One of the biggest questions surrounding the reboot is whether any of the original cast will return. While Gillian Anderson has previously expressed that she’s moved on from the role of Dana Scully, Coogler revealed that the two have been in touch about the reboot.
“She’s incredible and fingers crossed there,” he said. “We’re going to try to make something really great, bro, and make something for the real ‘X-Files’ fans and maybe find some new ones.”
Series creator Chris Carter has also spoken publicly about Coogler’s involvement, revealing on CBC Radio that the filmmaker is planning a “diverse” reinterpretation of the beloved show.
“I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast,” Carter shared in the 2023 interview. “He has his work cut out for him because we covered so much territory.”
While David Duchovny has expressed openness to returning as Fox Mulder, no casting decisions have been confirmed.
