Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin Team Up for Ruth & Boaz
Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin are bringing the biblical story of Ruth and Boaz into the modern day. Their new film, “Ruth & Boaz,” will debut on Netflix on September 26. This is the first project from their new creative partnership with Netflix.
The film is a modern reimagining of the timeless tale of loyalty, love, and redemption. Tyler Perry called the collaboration with Franklin exciting and full of potential for the future.
“I’m thrilled to kick off my partnership with DeVon Franklin with ‘Ruth & Boaz.’ I can’t wait for audiences everywhere to experience the film when it arrives.”

Tyler Lepley and Serayah Lead a Powerful Cast
The film stars Tyler Lepley and Serayah as the modern-day Ruth and Boaz. Their chemistry is one of the most talked-about aspects of the film’s trailer. The actors credit their strong on-screen connection to past projects they’ve worked on together.
“Well, she’s pretty cool. So it’s kind of easy,” Lepley joked. “We worked on Goons together, which is a hard film. We worked a few times… But we also did a video, Neo’s video. So it was pretty natural, you know?” Serayah added.
This comfort and familiarity brought depth and realism to their portrayal of love, trust, and transformation. Audiences can expect a relationship that feels authentic and grounded in real emotion.
Faith-Based Films Are Reaching Bigger Audiences
Producer DeVon Franklin hopes “Ruth & Boaz” will expand how people view faith-based films. Franklin is known for producing hits like Miracles from Heaven and Breakthrough. This film takes a broader approach to storytelling.
Lepley shared how the story appeals to a wide range of viewers, not just those of faith.
“This story is able to touch different parts of the audience. Of course, you have the faith-based audience. You have people that love a great love story, a great Black love story. People love DeVon Franklin, Tyler Perry, and Netflix.”
Franklin and Perry believe the story will surprise many with its relatable themes and emotional strength. The goal is to make people feel seen, inspired, and uplifted.
Phylicia Rashad Adds Wisdom and Warmth to the Story
Legendary actress Phylicia Rashad plays a pivotal role in “Ruth & Boaz,” adding her signature grace and power to the film. Her narration sets the tone in the trailer, and she shares emotional scenes with Serayah.
“She didn’t insert herself to correct me or anything like that,” Serayah said. “I think whatever felt good, she encouraged. She’s a vet… She has this motherly vibe that just makes you immediately feel safe with her.”
Lepley was equally inspired by working with Rashad and admired her calm presence on set.
“I think what I take away from it is like, if we work hard enough one day, we can get to that level.”
DeVon Franklin’s Mission: Inspire, Uplift, and Entertain
DeVon Franklin said adapting this story was a personal and professional challenge. He dug deep into scripture to find the heart of the story and make it relevant today.
“There’s never been a modern adaptation of the story of Ruth and Boaz, to my knowledge. The challenge is… how do you take what happened in the scripture thousands of years ago and update and interpret it for a modern audience?”
Franklin sees entertainment as a tool for transformation. He believes the best stories are the ones that make people feel seen, heard, and hopeful.
“I want [audiences] not only to be entertained but inspired… I want people to turn on the movie feeling depressed, and they end the film and they’re like, ‘Hey, I’m ready to go.’”
He added that the film’s power lies in its realness—its willingness to show pain, conflict, and growth.
“The key with Ruth & Boaz was tell the story. The story itself is going to deliver the message… You can’t inspire someone if you don’t relate to what they’ve gone through.”
What Makes Ruth & Boaz So Special?
“Ruth & Boaz” isn’t just a movie—it’s a message of hope wrapped in modern storytelling. With a cast that includes Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Jermaine Dupri, and Gregalan Williams, the film has both heart and star power.
The story of “Ruth and Boaz” is about choosing love after loss and trusting in something bigger than ourselves. Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin’s modern take makes that message more relevant than ever.
Directed by Alanna Brown and written by Michael Elliot and Cory Tynan, the film promises to move audiences of all backgrounds. It’s a celebration of resilience, romance, and redemption that speaks to the soul.
