*Former NBA star Rick Fox is stepping into the political arena in the Bahamas, announcing his candidacy for a legislative seat through a detailed social media post ahead of next year’s general election.
The three-time NBA champion and longtime Bahamian ambassador outlined a platform emphasizing transparency, economic growth, and greater opportunities for all citizens.
“You’ve shared that you want more transparency, a modern economy that prioritizes affordability and security, and a country where opportunity is our reality, not just a promise,” Fox, who was born in Canada but raised in the island nation, wrote on Facebook, as CBS Sports reports. “I share that vision. And I’m stepping forward today because we cannot wait any longer to realize a Bahamas that we all envision is possible.”
Fox, 56, started playing basketball in the Bahamas before moving to Indiana for high school. His NBA career included time with Boston and the Lakers. Following retirement, he shifted his focus to entertainment and entrepreneurship.
Fox previously owned the esports organization Echo Fox before leaving in 2019. His extensive acting portfolio spans numerous television series and films, including the 2005 Spike Lee thriller “Highest 2 Lowest.” Now, Fox is applying the same drive to politics.
“As a candidate and as a leader for the Bahamas, I will demand transparency, honesty, and integrity while demanding a level of excellence from all of us,” he said.
“This is bigger than party politics. This is the Bahamas versus the world. Imagine a nation where every Bahamian feels secure, safe, empowered, and proud. Where opportunity flows, innovation thrives, and our people shape the world from home,” Fox added.
