*Doctors were left stunned by the case of a 15-year-old girl from Lesotho, South Africa, who became pregnant despite being born without a functional vaginal opening.
As MadameNoire reports, her case, first documented in 1988 in the British Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, remains one of the most extraordinary medical events ever recorded. The teen was born with distal vaginal atresia, a rare congenital condition in which the vaginal canal does not fully develop. This condition affects approximately one in 4,000 to 10,000 women and is usually diagnosed when a girl reaches puberty and fails to menstruate.
Her pregnancy was discovered after she was rushed to the hospital due to severe abdominal pain. Doctors performed a C-section to safely deliver a 6.2-pound baby boy, but the biggest mystery remained—how had she conceived without vaginal intercourse or assisted reproductive technology.
According to medical reports, the teen preferred oral sex due to her condition, as previous attempts at vaginal intercourse had been unsuccessful. During one such intimate encounter, tragedy struck—her ex-boyfriend, in a violent attack, stabbed her multiple times in the abdomen.
Miraculously, she survived—but doctors believe the assault played an unexpected role in her pregnancy. The New York Post reported that sperm she had ingested may have entered her reproductive system through the stab wounds.

Normally, stomach acid destroys sperm, making conception impossible. However, doctors theorized that the teen’s malnourished state may have lowered her stomach’s acidity, allowing the sperm to remain viable long enough to travel through her injuries and fertilize an egg.
Equally shocked by the pregnancy, the teen had noticed changes in her body but never suspected she was carrying a child.
