*The family of Raejonette Morgan, in collaboration with prominent attorney Ben Crump and civil rights activist Najee Ali, director of Project Islamic Hope, is urgently calling for a comprehensive investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department into the untimely death of Morgan, a 22-year-old African American woman.
On Friday, July 5, at 11 am, a press conference will be held at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Station, 1310 West Imperial Highway, Los Angeles, CA 90044, where Crump, Ali, and the Morgan family will address the incident and demand justice.
Raejonette Morgan was shot in a barrage of bullets on July 2 in South Los Angeles. As the tragic scene unfolded, a Sheriff’s deputy, who was seated in his patrol car nearby, failed to render any aid to the critically injured victim. Morgan succumbed to her injuries on July 4, at UCLA Harbor General Hospital.
According to her family, Morgan fell victim to a mistaken identity shooting by alleged gang members. The family is now calling for justice and urging those responsible for her murder to come forward.
Adding to the gravity of the situation is a Facebook Live video that has garnered national attention, capturing the inaction of the Sheriff’s deputy. Watch it below.
The video was recorded by activist Dionne M. Leslie-Pullen, who heroically intervened, breaking the car window and attempting to assist Morgan with whatever she could, contrasting starkly with the passive behavior of the deputy.
The deputy’s inaction has evoked painful memories reminiscent of the devastating school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, where a Sheriff’s deputy similarly failed to intervene as children tragically lost their lives.
Attorney Ben Crump, known for his influential advocacy in civil rights legal cases, has pledged his support to the Morgan family. “I offer my prayers to you and your family regarding the loss of your daughter. As I told Najee, my law firm will join you in demanding a full investigation,” Crump stated.
Najee Ali, elaborating on their demands, said, “We are also calling for a meeting with Los Angeles Deputy Sheriff Robert Luna, who has a long track record of great character and integrity. What his deputy did, which was captured on cell phone video by a good Samaritan, was shocking, reprehensible, and inexcusable.”

Ali went on to question the protocols followed by the Sheriff’s Department when attending to shooting victims who are still alive. “We want to know directly from Sheriff Luna what the protocol is for shooting victims who are still alive. We want this deputy’s name released and want to see if he has a history of complaints concerning not helping African American crime victims,” Ali stated.
The incident has triggered a wider discourse on racial disparities in law enforcement’s response to emergencies.
“I honestly believe that if a young white woman had been shot in a hail of bullets, this deputy would have sprung into action and not allowed her to bleed out in the car. He would have broken the car window himself to render aid and CPR, and not waited for a good Samaritan to do his job for him,” Ali poignantly added.
The press conference is expected to be attended by Morgan’s family, Najee Ali, Lawanda Hawkins (President of Justice for Murdered Children), and Assemblymember Mike Gipson. They hope the event will generate further national and media attention, thereby pressuring the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation.
