*Publishers Clearing House (PCH), renowned for its sweepstakes and signature Prize Patrol presentations of oversized checks, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.
According to The Independent, court filings reveal the company is grappling with just $490,000 in cash against a staggering $40 million in debt. This financial strain has prompted a major overhaul of its business model, marking a pivotal moment for the brand established in 1953.
PCH plans to abandon its traditional direct mail catalog and magazine subscription operations, which once fueled its reputation as a household name. Despite generating $879 million in revenue in 2018, the company has faced declining sales as consumer preferences shifted toward online platforms. Moving forward, PCH will pivot to focus exclusively on digital advertising and online gaming to adapt to modern market trends.
“Today marks a crucial development in our transition to a digital advertising-supported entertainment company,” CEO Andy Goldberg said in a statement. The company is “taking action to establish a strong foundation for our future,” he continued.
The company’s beloved sweepstakes will remain a central feature. Known for its weekly $10,000 giveaways, PCH has awarded over $500 million in prizes since its founding. Court documents indicate that PCH currently distributes $30,000 weekly, with $1.8 million owed to recent winners and $26 million committed to lifetime winners over the next six decades. Beyond prize obligations, PCH also owes funds to employees, vendors, service providers, and landlords.
Goldberg emphasized the continuity of these giveaways, stating, “Importantly, our world-renowned sweepstakes will continue to be a cornerstone of our experiences, and we intend to continue offering free-to-play entertainment and awarding prizes in the ordinary course of business during and after this process to uphold the historic legacy of Publishers Clearing House.”
