*Paul Thomas Anderson is speaking out about the controversy surrounding his Oscar-winning film “One Battle After Another” and its depiction of Black women.
The filmmaker claimed three of the night’s most prestigious honors — best picture, best director, and best adapted screenplay — at the 2026 Academy Awards before addressing reporters in the Oscars press room. Anderson responded to questions about the racial politics surrounding Teyana Taylor’s character, Perfidia Beverly Hills. The revolutionary figure at the center of the debate is portrayed as deeply flawed, with choices that ultimately undermine the very cause she champions.
“I know a little bit about that critique. I know that Teyana has talked about it a lot. I know that we have the portrayal of many different characters. In particular her character, who was so flawed and unfortunately makes decisions that are detrimental to the revolution that she’s trying to fight,” Anderson said, per THR.

“It’s complicated. We always knew that we were trying to make something complicated. We knew that we weren’t making something that was heroic and we needed to lean into that,” he added.
“We need to own the fact that this woman was suffering not only from postpartum depression, but she had issues of her own that she hadn’t really reconciled with,” Anderson said.
Anderson described Perfidia’s fall from idealist to antihero as an intentional narrative choice, one meant to pave the way for a new chapter centered on Chase Infiniti’s character, Willa. For Anderson, the film’s true emotional stakes rest in how Willa confronts and moves beyond the fractured world her parents left behind.
“The point of it is to set up a story of Willa, the next generation. What happens when your parents, who are damaged and have handed quite a difficult history to you — how do you manage that? That’s our story. Our story is in Chase, and her reaching, like I talked about in terms of the generational aspect, to try to do better,” he explained.
