*Ohio reporter Winnie-Marie Dortch is on the road to recovery after being shot by her alleged lover who then fatally shot himself.
According to Lakewood police, Dortch was shot during a domestic incident in Lakewood, Ohio, SandraRose.com reports. Around 7:54 a.m. on Monday, 911 callers reported an argument outside a preschool, followed by gunshots. When officers arrived, they found Dortch with a serious gunshot wound and a man, later identified as 34-year-old Bryant Carter, dead at the scene. Police believe Carter shot Dortch before taking his own life.
Friends of Dortch reportedly noted on Facebook that Carter frequently watched Dortch on Cleveland’s WOIO Channel 19 News before they met and began dating.
“It’s a tragedy,” Father Kevin Elbert, a priest from nearby St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, told WKYC of the shooting. “This is so close to home. This is a tragic event. Any loss of life is a tragic event, especially in a place that’s holy ground.”

According to WOIO 19 News, Dortch is recovering from surgery at MetroHealth Medical Center
“This morning, our friend and colleague Winnie Dortch was the victim of a brutal domestic violence attack, She was immediately rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center and underwent surgery for her injuries,” WOIO News Director Brian Sinclair said in a statement, PEOPLE reports. “Our prayers are with her, her young daughter, and the many other victims of domestic violence in our community.”
Dortch announced on social media that she and her daughter were moving to her hometown Chicago, where she had accepted her “dream job.
“For years, I’ve been trying to make it back home to the best city in the Midwest!” she wrote in a Sept. 18 Instagram post. “God has a way of bringing things FULL CIRCLE! My childhood dream has come true. As of December 2024, I will be a full-time reporter at WGN-TV. To my family, friends, co-workers, strangers and associates, thank you for the encouragement. I’M COMING HOME YALL!”
According to Lakewood police, detectives are “conducting an ongoing investigation of the incident itself, as well as the nature of the relationship between the two involved parties, as it appears that they were familiar with each other.”
