“High blood pressure is the leading cause of stroke,” says Romy Nathan, M.P.H., RDN. She highlights the effectiveness of the DASH diet, which promotes whole grains, fruits, and low-fat dairy to help manage blood pressure.
Potassium plays a critical role in this process by flushing excess sodium from the body. “Potassium causes the kidneys to excrete excess sodium from the body,” explains Joan Salge Blake, Ed.D., RDN. The American Heart Association recommends that men consume 3,400 milligrams of potassium per day, while women should aim for 2,600 milligrams.
Oats are especially beneficial thanks to their beta-glucan content—a type of soluble fiber known for its ability to reduce LDL cholesterol. “This in turn helps to lower your LDL levels and keep less atherogenic plaque from accumulating in artery walls,” Nathan adds. Reduced plaque buildup means fewer blockages, which translates to a lower risk of stroke.

Adding berries to the mix not only enhances flavor but also contributes even more health benefits. Rich in anthocyanins, blueberries and strawberries provide antioxidants that help protect the lining of blood vessels.
“Antioxidants neutralize free radicals and reduce inflammation in blood vessels, ultimately protecting the lining of blood vessels from damage,” Nathan notes.
Beyond breakfast, dietitians advocate additional stroke-prevention strategies. “Saturated fat is the primary culprit for increased LDL levels, and reducing it in one’s diet is the first step to healthier blood lipid levels,” Nathan advises, suggesting plant-based meals to replace processed meats. Moderate alcohol consumption—one drink daily for women, two for men—and regular exercise also lower stroke risk significantly.
