*Meagan Good delivers a heartfelt performance as Carlie in Lifetime’s “Terry McMillan Presents: Forever,” a film that resonates deeply with her own life.
Playing a police officer, cancer survivor, and single mother who finds love with a military veteran, Johnnie (Taye Diggs), Good channels her experiences to portray a woman embracing a second chance at romance. “You just have to open your heart and say, ‘The worst has already happened, so now I have everything to gain.’ Even if I get hurt again, it’ll still be worth it — to live, to experience, to love,” she said, sharing the film’s inspiring message in an interview with Gold Derby.
Good’s connection to Carlie is personal. Her father is a Vietnam veteran with PTSD: “I understood Johnnie’s experience,” she said.
“My father was LAPD for 26 years. I had recently gone through a divorce myself. I’m in a space now where I really want to be a mother. And then, ultimately, my uncle passed away from cancer,” the actress shared.
These parallels fueled her passion to bring authenticity to the role, aiming to “empower women, make them feel strong and hopeful, and inspire them to believe in love again.”
“I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me to warn my dad that was going to happen,” she said, regretting not warning her father about the film’s emotional impact. “It surprised him and I felt really bad about that. But I just realized how important it is to tell the truth in a story and to be as honest as possible because there’s healing involved in that.”
The story takes a tragic turn when Carlie is fatally shot in a robbery, a plot twist that stunned Good.
“It was shocking!” she revealed. “I burst out crying. I wasn’t expecting that. I’m not even watching this, I’m reading it!”
As co-executive producer of the 2024 film, Good aims to create stories that uplift women, drawing from her family and personal experiences.
“Terry McMillan Presents: Forever” can be streamed on VOD and is slated for a Lifetime re-airing this summer.
