*Lizzo has penned a candid reflection on her personal transformation and the shifting landscape for plus-size women in today’s culture. The Grammy-winning artist published an essay on Substack titled “Why is everybody losing weight and what do we do? Sincerely, a person who’s lost weight,” addressing both her own journey and broader societal trends.
As PEOPLE reports, Lizzo expressed alarm about what she perceives as the disappearance of plus-size representation amid the popularity of weight-loss medications. “So here we are halfway through the decade, where extended sizes are being magically erased from websites. Plus-sized models are no longer getting booked for modeling gigs. And all of our big girls are not-so-big anymore,” she wrote, adding, “We have a lot of work to do, to undo the effects of the Ozempic boom.”
Despite her own weight changes, Lizzo clarified that she still weighs over 200 pounds and considers herself “a proud big girl.” However, she revealed that frustration with public perception played a role in her decision to transform her body. She grew weary of her physical appearance dominating conversations about her artistry.

“People could not see my talent as a musician because they were too busy accusing me of making ‘being fat’ my whole personality,” Lizzo explained. She described deliberately challenging stereotypes through her public persona: “I had to actively work against ‘mammy’ tropes by being hypersexual and vulgar because being a mammy by definition is being desexualized.”
The singer then offered a stark observation about contemporary pressures: “And that’s the reality that nobody wants to talk about. We’re in an era where the bigger girls are getting smaller because they’re tired of being judged.”
Lizzo’s essay challenges the current state of body positivity discourse. “I want us to allow the body positive movement to expand and grow far away from the commercial slop it’s become. Because movements move,” she wrote.
