*Lizzo is set to take on her first leading film role as she portrays the legendary Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming biopic, “Rosetta.”
Known as the “Godmother of Rock and Roll,” Tharpe was a pioneering gospel musician in the 1930s whose innovative fusion of spiritual lyrics with electric guitar reshaped the genre and laid the groundwork for rock music as we know it today.
Lizzo took to Instagram to express her enthusiasm about the role, sharing a post from Deadline with the caption, “Black people made rock n roll yeaaaah.” The Grammy-winning singer followed up in her Instagram stories, writing, “It’s finally out ya’ll. I’m so excited and honored.”
PEOPLE reports that the biopic will be penned by Natalie Chaidez (The Flight Attendant, Queen of the South) and Kwynn Perry (Tigerbelles, The Burned Photo). Actor Forest Whitaker serves as a producer on the project along with Lizzo, Kevin Beisler, and Significant Productions’ Nina Yang Bongiovi.
This marks Lizzo’s first major film role since her appearance in “Hustlers” (2019), where she had a brief appearance alongside Jennifer Lopez as a stripper named Liz.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s impact on music is immeasurable. Beginning her musical journey in the church, she skillfully blended gospel with rhythm and blues, showcasing remarkable proficiency on the electric guitar—a rarity for female musicians of her time. Her influence extended to legendary artists such as Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, and Little Richard. Reflecting on Tharpe’s impact, Chuck Berry once admitted, “My whole career has been one long Sister Rosetta Tharpe impersonation.”
Though she passed away in 1973, Tharpe’s legacy continues to be celebrated. The U.S. Postal Service honored her with a 32-cent stamp in 1998, and she was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2007. Pennsylvania, where she spent much of her career, officially recognized January 11th as Sister Rosetta Tharpe Day.
In 2017, she was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, further cementing her place in music history.
