*Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested Thursday on suspicion of misconduct in public office, months after losing his “prince” title and other royal honors in October 2025 due to controversy surrounding his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The 66-year-old was detained at his residence on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England, The Daily News reports. The timing coincided with his 66th birthday. In a formal message released by Buckingham Palace on February 19, King Charles III addressed the matter publicly.
“I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office. What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities. In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and cooperation,” Charles said, per US magazine.
He further stated, “Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.” The King added that it would be inappropriate to comment further while the inquiry is underway and affirmed that he and his family will continue carrying out their public responsibilities.
Thames Valley Police confirmed the launch of a formal investigation. “Thames Valley Police has opened an investigation into the offense of misconduct in public office,” the agency said in a press release.
The announcement continued, “As part of the investigation, we have today (19/2) arrested a man in his sixties from Norfolk on suspicion of misconduct in public office and are carrying out searches at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk. The man remains in police custody at this time.” Although authorities did not identify the individual, multiple media outlets named Andrew as the person arrested.
Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright also issued a statement, saying, “Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office.” He added, “It is important that we protect the integrity and objectivity of our investigation as we work with our partners to investigate this alleged offense,” and noted, “We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time.”
Andrew’s arrest followed sustained scrutiny tied to his past association with Epstein and sexual abuse allegations brought by Virginia Giuffre, claims he has repeatedly denied.
