*Kenan Thompson is getting another turn behind the judges’ table on “America’s Got Talent.”
The “Saturday Night Live” veteran will join Mel B, Howie Mandel and Sofía Vergara for Tuesday’s episode, stepping in for Simon Cowell as he recovers from back surgery, according to Entertainment Tonight. It marks Thompson’s second time serving as a guest judge on the competition, having previously replaced Cowell in 2015.
Cowell’s absence comes as the show enters the later stages of its season. His representative said the procedure is routine and that the longtime judge is expected to return within a few weeks.

Host Terry Crews addressed the situation, making clear that Cowell’s surgery was necessary but not an emergency.
“He’s having an operation that cannot be postponed,” Crews said. “It’s not an emergency, but it can’t be put off. Simon, we are sending you our very best wishes for speedy recovery, and we’re looking forward to seeing you back at the judges’ desk very soon.”
Thompson’s role will be somewhat limited. The judges can still react to performances and provide feedback, but audience voting determines who advances. The season will continue through additional rounds before the winner of the $1 million prize is announced September 23.
“America’s Got Talent” airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and streams the following day on Peacock.
