*Joe Budden is weighing in on the backlash surrounding Kevin Hart and a recent Netflix roast that drew criticism over racially charged jokes. During an episode of “The Joe Budden Podcast,” Budden questioned Hart’s response to viewers who were upset by racial humor featured during the special.
The controversy largely centered on comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, whose roast set included jokes about George Floyd. Online reaction escalated quickly, with many viewers calling the material offensive and criticizing the event for what they described as tone-deaf racial humor from multiple white comedians.
As criticism spread online, Hart addressed the situation during an appearance on “The Breakfast Club.” The comedian acknowledged that some of the jokes in the roast were in poor taste, while still defending Hinchcliffe’s right to perform offensive material during the show.
“I wasn’t shocked. That’s what they do. Go look at the Tom Brady one. That’s what they do. It happens every year when they do a roast. It’s not a new agenda (and) it’s not a new approach to comedy,” Hart said. “It’s Tony Hinchcliffe. Like, I don’t expect less, I don’t expect more.”
As we reported earlier, a spokesperson for The Gianna and George Floyd Foundation described Hinchcliffe’s jokes as “sad for the culture,” while George Floyd’s brother publicly called it “totally disrespectful.” Family members and supporters also expressed outrage over the use of Floyd’s death as comedic material.
Budden strongly disagreed with Hart’s approach and argued that many fans felt dismissed by the comedian’s explanation.
“Kevin Hart is gaslighting people,” Budden said, Hot New Hip Hop reports. “The people that are offended don’t give a f*** that he had one of the best sets & if anyone is supposed to understand that it’s you.”
The podcast host also discussed growing criticism suggesting Hart has become increasingly aligned with controversial white comedians. Budden said Hart’s recent comments only added fuel to those conversations.
“Some of those accusations about Kevin appear true & if Kev doesn’t look at himself as one of ours then I’m not about to keep looking at him that way,” Budden continued.
