*A growing number of companies across the United States are preparing to cut jobs in January, with new filings showing that layoffs will impact workers across industries ranging from retail and manufacturing to healthcare and technology.
According to Newsweek, employers, including Amazon, FedEx, and General Motors, have submitted notices signaling workforce reductions after the holiday season. The filings come amid continued economic uncertainty, as businesses navigate fluctuating trade policies, evolving labor costs, and longer-term structural changes. While layoffs are often viewed as indicators of economic strain, experts note that many companies are also using this period to reorganize operations or adjust for future growth strategies.
Under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN), employers must provide at least 60 days’ notice before carrying out mass layoffs. Data compiled by WARNTracker.com shows that more than 100 companies have already filed notices indicating plans to reduce staff in January 2026.
The affected employers include major retailers such as H&M Fashion USA, Inc., and Nike Retail Services, Inc., financial institutions like Wells Fargo and Huntington National Bank, and manufacturers like International Paper and Smurfit Kappa.

Labor economist Joanne Song McLaughlin of the University of Buffalo previously explained the broader forces shaping these decisions. “The current economic uncertainty comes from volatility in trade and fiscal policies, and the government shutdown. We also experience underlying structural changes driven by AI, which I believe could have an interaction effect on the policy and political volatilities. Uncertainty makes it hard for employers to predict, so they will most likely reduce investment and employment,” she told Newsweek in 2025.
Others point to corporate priorities rather than economic collapse as a driving factor. HR consultant Bryan Driscoll previously told Newsweek, “This isn’t some sign the whole economy’s falling apart. It’s a sign leadership is more focused on pleasing shareholders than supporting the workers who actually keep the place running.”
