*Karri Turner Bryant is redirecting attention away from her wardrobe choices and toward more significant societal concerns following weeks of online debate about her December outfit.
We reported earlier that the controversy centered on a black lace gown with a flesh-toned illusion bodice she wore to the 2025 United Negro College Fund Atlanta Mayor’s Masked Ball on Dec. 20. The couple appeared on the “Tamron Hall” show on Wednesday to address the backlash. Turner Bryant made clear that her fashion decisions weren’t calculated to provoke reactions from strangers.
“People have said, ‘Oh, you know, she knew it would get this reaction,'” Turner Bryant said, per Blavity. “My ego is not that big. I don’t dress for people. I dress for myself and for my husband. Am I a wife? Yeah, I’m a wife. I’m a daughter. I have a doctorate. I’m a professor. There are plenty of things that I do, and the challenge is, we often want to see a woman be one-dimensional. I am multi-dimensional. I carry multiple titles.”
Pastor Bryant explained that took particular issue with Bishop Patrick Wooden of Upper Room Church of God, who compared Turner Bryant’s outfit to a “$2 whore.”

Bryant had previously defended his wife during a New Year’s Eve sermon, revealing he purchased the dress himself and wouldn’t accept criticism directed at her. Bishop Wooden accused Bryant of “demeaning” his wife.
During the “Tamron Hall” appearance, Turner Bryant challenged critics to channel their energy toward meaningful issues instead of critiquing her appearance.
“After you get done scrolling, our parents, many of us are still struggling with Social Security,” she said on the daytime talk show, noting that “there are still healthcare issues around insurance in this nation.”
Turner Bryant added, “After you get done scrolling, there are still upwards of 500,000 Black women who are unemployed… and so we have so many things that we can put our energy and our focus on, and that’s what I hope we do.”
