*Derry will look far different when “It: Welcome to Derry” returns for its second season.
The prequel series will move from 1962 to 1935, placing its next group of characters inside a town battered by poverty, unemployment and social unrest. Co-creator Andy Muschietti confirmed that development has begun.
“We’re very excited, we’re in the writers’ room right now,” Muschietti told Variety.
The new season will draw from the Bradley Gang Massacre, a historical passage in Stephen King’s 1986 novel “It.” The next installment will center on violent outlaws who take refuge in Derry while evading federal authorities. That incident gives the writers a starting point, but the larger story will examine how residents behave when survival becomes uncertain.

“There’s gonna be a lot of that depression-era hustling in the air in our characters. Everybody’s trying to get by and survive the circumstances. They are gonna do crazy things,” Muschietti said.
He added that the season will confront the period’s broader injustices.
“And of course, the social, cultural, horrible things that were happening in the era, too. We’re not going to skip those. [They are the] very center and the heart of our story.”
The setting will also separate Season 2 from the suburban world often associated with the “It” franchise. Muschietti described this version of Derry as physically and emotionally depleted.
“In this case, on the surface, Derry is a graveyard almost. It’s a carcass of something because people are depleted, poor, tired, jobless, homeless,” he said.
The younger characters will face that hardship directly. Some will be runaways or orphans without stable homes, although Muschietti said hope will remain part of the group’s journey.
The limited details King provided about 1935 also give the creators room to expand the town’s history. Familiar family lines will help connect the new characters to those introduced in Season 1.
“There will always be the connection, there’s a family tree that appears,” Muschietti said.
“It: Welcome to Derry” serves as a prequel to “It” and “It Chapter Two.” The creators previously outlined a three-season plan moving backward through 1962, 1935 and 1908. Season 1 is streaming on HBO Max.
