*Issa Rae credits a simple notebook habit she performs every six months with keeping her goals focused and her ambitions grounded. The award-winning creator and entrepreneur has shared how this recurring exercise helps her sort through ideas, determine what is realistic, and remain disciplined throughout the year.
According to CNBC, Rae begins each year on New Year’s Day by sitting down to outline her goals in a notebook. She returns to those pages halfway through the year to evaluate her progress and make necessary changes. The process kicks off on what she calls “my superpower day.”
“That’s when everything feels possible. Everything will get done. I look at the [old] notebooks, compile the ideas that I wrote down and decide what’s attainable and what’s achievable, and I will set those goals,” Rae explains. Looking back at previous entries allows her to build a sharper roadmap for the months ahead.

Her approach involves splitting goals into personal and professional buckets, with each receiving a different level of specificity. “The resolutions I keep to three or four, and they’re really general, like, ‘read more,’ ‘be better.’ But the career and personal ones are actually very specific,” she says.
“The best ideas show up when I’m just chilling,” Rae says. “I always have a notebook near me.”
Rae has acknowledged being “not a good long-term thinker,” which makes this structured approach all the more essential for her. She believes that “having a routine and being really, really intentional about what my goals are” is what enables her to stay on course.
