*Race? What about race? That’s a non-issue when it comes to Isaiah Hartenstein and Paul George. The pair, whose bromance is alive and kicking, can thank Hartenstein’s father for its birth.
In a recent chat on George’s popular podcast show “Podcast Podcast P with Paul George,” he and Hartenstein had a good laugh over the moment George discovered the elder Hartenstein was the same race as he. It was that moment when the energy shifted between the athletes
“That man’s whole energy towards me changed. He looks at his phone, ‘Your dad Black?'” the Oklahoma City Thunder center recalled as George chimed in with struggle to find the car the patriarch was in to confirm what he saw.
“I’m scrolling on Instagram, and I saw like his dad was Black. Was he in the Escalade?” George asked.
“Yeah, he was,” confirmed Hartenstein.

“It f***ed me up, because I didn’t know what car it was, obviously, but like he was blocking me,” the Philadelphia 76’ers small forward responded. “So I went up trying to get out. He rolled the window down and looked exactly like Zay.”
“If my dad didn’t look exactly like me,” Hartenstein said, “I’d be like, ‘Yo, Moms… who’s this dude?’”
The players’ exchange was an entertaining one, illustrating firsthand how a funny revelation can put shared experiences and cultural roots into focus in a natural way.
“George’s genuine surprise and Isaiah’s playful delivery highlighted just how little race played into their dynamic initially, but also how culture can shape bonds once discovered,” Fadeaway World mentioned while pointing out the obvious with Hartenstein’s appearance leading folks to assume he’s “fully white.”

Hartenstein’s white American mother, Theresa Hartenstein can take credit for much of his physical looks, but it was his Black and German dad. Florian, who shaped his early love of basketball and future sports career.
Florian, a former professional basketball player who currently makes a living as a coach, played a huge role in shaping Isaiah’s early love for the game.
Although Hartenstein’s heritage was never a major focus for the media, George’s random and revealing Instagram discovery was the stuff of headlines, complete with inside jokes to add to the moment their friendship elevated to a priceless level.
Since hitting the Internet, the moment struck a nerve online. Viral clips from the podcast have circulated as fans have labeled the interaction between Hartenstein and George among the funniest exchanges of the offseason.
“Beyond the laughs, the segment subtly touches on themes of identity, assumptions, and the unspoken codes that often exist in sports culture,” Fadeaway World pointed out, adding that, “George didn’t treat Hartenstein any differently on the court, but in that moment, he felt a newfound cultural connection, one that only made their bond stronger.”
