*Gayle King has secured a new agreement with CBS that dramatically reduces both her workload and compensation, according to sources close to the situation.
According to RadarOnline, the 71-year-old broadcast veteran will now earn approximately $10 million annually, down from her previous $15 million salary, while transitioning to a part-time position at “CBS Good Morning.”
Network insiders revealed to Hollywood journalist Rob Shuter, writing on Substack, that King actively shaped the terms of her new arrangement. “Gayle called the shots,” one source said. “She knew exactly what she wanted – less work, less stress, but still the spotlight.” A different source suggested the timing aligned with CBS’s financial needs, stating: “CBS loves her, but they also needed to make adjustments.” The source added, “This was a perfect compromise. She keeps her profile, they cut costs, everyone wins.”
Under the revised terms, King will concentrate on special assignments rather than daily anchoring duties. “She didn’t just take a pay cut. She traded hours, meetings, and daily grind for the freedom to do special segments and interviews she actually wants to do,” one source explained. Another insider characterized the arrangement differently: “She’s basically moving into a ‘special projects’ role. She can still headline big interviews, still be a face for the network, but she won’t be chained to a morning show desk five days a week.”

A CBS executive defended the outcome as mutually beneficial: “It’s a win-win. Gayle keeps her reputation, CBS keeps a marquee name, and the viewers don’t lose her presence entirely.”
The restructured deal arrives as King’s contract is set to expire in May; speculation had swirled about whether she would depart the network entirely amid the leadership changes.
King publicly addressed departure rumors in October 2025, stating: “All I can say is this: From what I’m being told inside this building … all I’ve been told by everybody in this building is that they want me here. They like the job I’m doing. I like the job I’m doing!”
