*Grandparents and even great-grandparents are excited that this generation was able to see the Artemis II rocket launch for a rendezvous to the moon—an event not seen since the Apollo launch; first in 1969, and the last in 1972. Hooray!
Meanwhile, back on earth everyone is talking about the skyrocketing prices of gasoline, but here’s something this generation has not seen nor probably even heard of—gas rationing! “Gas…what!?”
The last president to call on Americans to conserve energy was Nixon in 1974. During the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) crisis where the Iranian oil embargo decreased our oil imports, he passed a bill called the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act, setting the nation’s maximum speed limit at 55 miles an hour. These were the days of fuel shortages triggered by the OPEC oil embargo, and the lower speed limit was designed to conserve gasoline.
In July 1978 our oil imports went from 5.8 million barrels a day to 445 thousand barrels a day just six months later in January 1979 due to, what consumers were told, a slowed production of oil in Iran.
In his speech on the Iran war, Trump boasted that America does not need Iran’s oil because we have enough. In response, one commentator asked: “then why are gas prices so high?” Good question!

During President Biden’s term he found it necessary to go into our oil reserves twice, and twice he—and no one else as far as I know—never asked the public to slow down and drive only as needed. We know many Americans won’t comply, but if the president asks it, many would. A question not asked is an answer not heard!
So, it comes down to this: Trump invaded Venezuela to get their oil; he bombs Iran because we don’t need their oil; and NASA spends 100 billion dollars on the Artemis Project sending a rocket carrying 700,000 gallons of fuel to explore the moon with no certain outcome; and Americans foot the bill at the gas pumps for all this nonsense! What’s the rationale?
The “No Kings” Day of March 2026, where the number of protesters skyrocketed to millions across the nation, should send a strong signal to the Trump administration that enough is enough; that the majority of true Americans still want a strong democracy; and that the tenets of The Preamble of the Constitution of the United States still stand:
“We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
