*President Donald Trump is calling for the cancellation of the troubled Freedom 250 concert series after more than half of the announced performers withdrew within days of the lineup being unveiled.
In a pair of Truth Social posts Saturday, Trump lashed out at artists who backed away from the patriotic concert series and suggested replacing them with a rally featuring himself as the main attraction.
The irony is that Freedom 250, the nonprofit organization founded by Trump to help commemorate America’s upcoming 250th birthday, was responsible for booking the performers he later described as “overpriced” and “third-rate.”
“We should have a giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY, for 250, instead of having overpriced singers, who nobody wants to hear, whose music is boring, and yet who do nothing but complain,” Trump wrote Saturday night, Variety is reporting.
Trump Proposes Replacing Artists with Himself
Earlier Saturday, Trump floated the idea of turning the event into what amounted to a presidential showcase.
In a lengthy Truth Social post, he suggested replacing departing performers with “the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World,” referring to himself as “the man who gets much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime” and “the Greatest President in History (THE GOAT!).”
Trump said he was considering an “AMERICA IS BACK Rally” at the same Washington location originally intended for the music event.
According to reporting cited by Variety, Freedom 250 adviser Danielle Alvarez later confirmed plans for Trump to kick off the Great American State Fair with an opening ceremony celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday.
Artists Began Dropping Out Almost Immediately
The Freedom 250 concert series was announced Wednesday and quickly ran into trouble.
Morris Day was among the first artists to distance himself from the event, describing his appearance as merely a “rumor.” Young MC followed, saying he believed the event had been presented as nonpartisan.
The list of withdrawals soon grew to include the Commodores, Martina McBride and Bret Michaels.
Michaels later said he had hoped to participate in support of veterans causes but became concerned after the event became politically divisive.
Within roughly 48 hours, five of the nine announced acts had exited the lineup.
Some Performers Are Still on Board
Not everyone has withdrawn from the lineup.
Vanilla Ice has publicly stated he still intends to perform despite the controversy. Fab Morvan, best known as one half of Milli Vanilli, has also remained committed to the event.
Freedom Williams of C&C Music Factory has said he is undecided, while Flo Rida has not publicly addressed the growing backlash.
That makes Trump’s broadside against the lineup particularly awkward, considering at least some of the performers he appeared to lump together as undesirable acts are still willing to appear.
Questions Grow About ‘Nonpartisan’ Branding
Freedom 250 has promoted its events as nonpartisan celebrations of America’s 250th anniversary.
However, several artists who withdrew indicated they were uncomfortable with the political controversy surrounding the concerts, while critics have questioned whether an organization founded by Trump can realistically position itself as politically neutral.
Those concerns may only intensify if Trump ultimately becomes the featured attraction at an event originally promoted as a bipartisan celebration of the nation’s founding.

What was intended as a high-profile patriotic music series has instead become a story about artist withdrawals, political backlash and a president publicly criticizing performers selected by his own organization.
Whether the Freedom 250 concerts proceed as planned, are dramatically reworked, or ultimately become a Trump-centered rally remains unclear.
For now, the biggest headline surrounding Freedom 250 isn’t who’s performing. It’s that the organizer appears ready to cancel the show after the talent started leaving.
