*Eric Dane has died at 53 after battling ALS, his family confirmed. The actor passed away on Thursday, Feb. 19, less than a year after publicly revealing his diagnosis.
In a statement to PEOPLE, his family shared, “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.” They also emphasized his dedication to ALS awareness and research.
Dane was best known for portraying Dr. Mark Sloane on “Grey’s Anatomy,” appearing from season 2 through season 9. Following news of his death, several of his former castmates publicly honored him.
Kevin McKidd posted a photo of Dane from the set of the ABC medical drama and wrote, “Rest in peace buddy..,” while Kim Raver remembered him as “a light” in a social media tribute. “Eric was a light. You’d see it effortlessly shine from him on the set of Grey’s as well as when he was with Rebecca and the girls,” she wrote, adding, “You will be missed ?.”
Patrick Dempsey also spoke about his late costar during an appearance on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show. “I feel really so sad for his children,” Dempsey said, sharing that they had been texting shortly before Dane’s condition declined. He described the rapid deterioration in his health but chose to focus on their time working together, saying, “He was the funniest man – he was such a joy to work with and I want to just remember him in that spirit because any time he was on set, he brought so much fun to it.”
After going public with his diagnosis in April 2025, Dane expressed his determination to keep fighting, saying, “I have two daughters at home… So I’m going to fight to the last breath on this one.”
He is survived by his wife Rebecca and their daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14.
