Per The Cool Down, the Volkswagen ID.4 has surged ahead of the Tesla Model Y in Europe, according to January 2025 sales data from JATO Dynamics. The ID.4 sold 7,177 units, a nearly 200% jump from January 2024, while the Tesla Model Y moved 6,115 units, down almost 50% from the previous year. The ID.4’s edge may stem from its price—around $40,000, roughly $3,000 less than the Model Y—alongside Tesla’s recent publicity challenges.
Globally, EV sales are on the rise, with over 17 million units sold in 2024, including nearly 2 million in North America. Charles Lester, data manager at Rho Motion, credits this growth to government policies: “What is clear is that government carrots and sticks are working.”
He points to consumer subsidies driving a 9% increase in North America and the UK’s ZEV mandate pushing manufacturers to prioritize low-emission vehicles. However, Europe saw a 3% drop in EV sales in 2024, which Lester links to policy shifts, noting, “Meanwhile the removal of subsidies in Germany had a devastating impact on the whole European market, if the US follows suit, we may see the same there.”
EVs generally produce less pollution than traditional vehicles, though lithium mining for batteries does generate carbon emissions—still far less than fossil fuels. The Volkswagen ID.4’s success highlights a shift toward accessible green options, even as regional trends vary. Despite setbacks in some markets, the global push for cleaner transportation continues to gain momentum.
