“Devil in a Blue Dress” did not make much noise at the box office in 1995. Three decades later, the Denzel Washington thriller has secured a far stronger legacy than its original ticket sales suggested.
The film currently holds a 92% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes from more than 120 reviews. Its growing popularity has established it as a standout neo-noir and one of Washington’s most admired crime dramas, according to Men’s Journal.
Carl Franklin wrote and directed the adaptation of Walter Mosley’s 1990 novel. Washington plays Easy Rawlins, an unemployed World War II veteran trying to rebuild his life in 1948 Los Angeles. A job locating a missing woman pulls Easy into a larger scheme involving violence, political influence and racial inequality. Jennifer Beals, Tom Sizemore and Maury Chaykin join Washington, while Don Cheadle delivers one of the film’s most celebrated performances.
That acclaim did not translate into strong theatrical business. Estimates place the movie’s worldwide earnings between $16 million and $22 million against a production cost of roughly $20 million to $27 million.

Critics still found much to admire during its initial release. Per Wiki, Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan praised “a striking performance by Denzel Washington” and called the film “the most exotic crime entertainment of the season.” Roger Ebert responded more strongly to the production’s mood and period detail than its mystery. James Berardinelli focused on the social forces behind the crime, arguing that the motives carried more weight than simply identifying those responsible.
The film continued reaching viewers after leaving theaters through VHS, DVD and Blu-ray editions. A restored Criterion Collection release arrived in 2022 on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD.
That extended life helped “Devil in a Blue Dress” escape the limits of its disappointing debut. What once appeared to be a commercial misfire now stands as an enduring example of how critical reputation can outlast opening-weekend results.
