*Angel Reese’s 2025 BET Awards win for Sportswoman Of The Year is a mystery to Claressa Shields.
The Olympic boxer, who was nominated for the honor alongside Reese, took her thoughts on the loss to social media the day after the annual show, which was held June 9 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
In Shields eyes, Sportswoman of the Year should have went to her for the accolades she has amassed.
“Still don’t know how I didn’t win the Sportswoman of the Year for the @BETAwards,” she began on X on June 10, “but Congrats to Angel Reese and all the other Nominees [shrug emoji] I just thought accolades mattered.”
As expected, Shield’s comments did not go unnoticed.

According to Vibe, her followers were quick to question what she wrote, with one person defending Reese in her reply.
“You a got [lot] ms shields but reese has accolades too,” the follower posted regarding the Chicago Sky player.
“Yes she does but who has more accolades…. More success in their field. Please use google before responding,” Shields replied, prompting the follower to break down the criteria for Sportswoman of the Year.
“It goes year by year not an overall award,” the follower’s account replied, “please read up on the award before you complain about it.”

In addition to Shields and Reese, Sportswoman of the Year nominees included fellow athletes Dawn Staley, A’ja Wilson, Sha’Carri Richardson, Simone Biles, Flau’jae Johnson, Coco Gauff, and JuJu Watkins. For the men, it was Aaron Judge, Anthony Edwards, Deion Sanders, Jayson Tatum, LeBron James, Saquon Barkley, Stephen Curry and Jalen Hurts, with Hurts taking Sportsman Of The Year nominees honors.
Shields may have been salty over Reese’s win, but she admitted to enjoying the BET Awards with her boyfriend, rapper Papoose and ended up falling back a bit to clarify what she meant, after the negative feedback from her initial post.
“Ain’t nobody saying Angel Reese don’t have accolades or she not good…., the pugilist said. “I’m saying I thought the person with “THE MOST” accolades & accomplishments would win the Award. I’m team Angel Reese!”

“I’m not joining in on any hate train when it comes to Angel Reese, I have mad respect for her and all the other female athletes that excel in their sport,” Shields continued. “As for my earlier comments I am allowed to express my feelings, I was shocked I didnt win, I was under the impression the category was graded on accolades of your sport. It’s ok to be a competitor.”

“Fortunate For All My Blessings [trophy emoji] For My First BET Nomination, I came how a Champion Should. We Enjoyed the Full @Betawards @bet Experience!,” Shields captioned on her picture-filled Instagram post with her man.
Reese has yet to weigh in on Shields’ remarks about not receiving the Sportswoman of the Year award.
