*Whoa! We didn’t quite see this coming. In a dramatic escalation of her break from the conservative movement, right-wing commentator Candace Owens has ignited a firestorm by calling on United States military personnel to resign from service, accusing President Donald Trump of betraying the nation by launching war with Iran.
In a viral thread on X (formerly Twitter) on March 6, Owens declared that the recent strikes against Iran—which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei—constitute a fundamental betrayal of the “America First” promises that defined Trump’s political brand.
“If you are a US soldier, resign today,” Owens wrote in a post that has since garnered over 1.2 million views. “Trump has betrayed America. He lied to us about not starting wars, and now we’re in one with Iran. This is not what we voted for.”
The “Israel First” Accusation
Owens, who endorsed Trump in the 2024 election cycle, has pivoted sharply in recent months toward an isolationist and anti-interventionist stance. She argues that the February 28 strikes that killed Khamenei were not about American security, but rather about serving Israeli interests.
In a follow-up video, she doubled down, claiming the administration is positioning American troops to die for foreign objectives. “Do not join or remain in the United States Military,” she urged. “Trump has betrayed America and expects you to die for Israel. There is no honor in being led by dishonorable men to your death.”
Her rhetoric taps into a growing isolationist sentiment within parts of the MAGA base, but the call for mass resignation has proven too radical for most conservatives.

A Fractured MAGA Movement
The response to Owens’ comments has been swift and deeply divided, highlighting the fractures within Trumpworld regarding foreign policy.
On the political right, the backlash was immediate. Far-right activist Laura Loomer, a staunch Trump ally, accused Owens of attempting to weaken the US military from within. “She wants our nation to be susceptible to attacks from adversaries,” Loomer wrote. “She has never made any real sacrifices for America.”
Conservative columnist Kurt Schlichter was even more blunt, telling Owens to “shut your r—– mouth about our troops. You’re a disgrace.”
However, Owens is not without defenders. A vocal anti-war faction within the conservative movement has rallied to her side, agreeing that the administration has walked back its non-interventionist pledges. The discourse online remains heated, with some accusing Owens of being a “grifter” flipping positions for clout, while liberals have mocked the irony of a former Trump cheerleader suddenly branding the president a warmonger.
Broader Implications
The controversy underscores a significant ideological rift in Trump’s second term. While the administration pushes forward with “unconditional surrender” demands against Iran, influencers like Owens are questioning whether the sacrifice is worth it.
Owens has also faced scrutiny regarding the legality of her statements, as encouraging military members to desert could potentially violate federal law. Nevertheless, she has shown no signs of backing down, continuing to post critical content aimed at the administration’s foreign policy.
