*Therapist Vanessa Milagros joined Monday’s episode of the “Tamron Hall Show” to explain the viral “bird theory” relationship trend and the science behind it.
The theory centers on small interactions between partners, showing how attentive each person is to the other.
As SandraRose.com reports, the concept is based on what therapists call “bids for connection,” everyday moments when one partner seeks engagement from the other.
In the bird theory test, even a mundane comment like “I saw a bird today” can reveal the strength of the relationship. If the partner turns toward the speaker to hear more, it indicates attentiveness and emotional connection.
Vanessa explained that the theory stems from research by marriage experts John Gottman and his wife Julie, who studied thousands of couples.

Their findings revealed that couples who remain together tend to respond to their partner’s bids around 86% of the time, highlighting the importance of noticing and engaging in these small moments.
Vanessa clarified that these bids involve sharing thoughts, experiences, or opinions throughout the day.
“So maybe you’re sharing something that happened during the day. A thought you had or an opinion, something interesting,” she said. “And if your partner is kind of ignoring you, brushing you off or maybe they’re minimizing it. But if they turn towards you, if they say, ‘Ok, well, tell me more about that.’ If they engage with you, then you feel seen.”
The theory emphasizes that relationships thrive not only on major gestures but also on consistent, everyday communication. By turning toward each other in these small moments, couples build trust, intimacy, and emotional security.
According to Milagros, paying attention to these tiny interactions can make a significant difference in maintaining a strong, connected relationship.
