*Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently shared insights into his plans for his vast fortune on the Figuring Out with Raj Shamani podcast.
With a net worth of $102.2 billion, Gates ranks as the thirteenth richest person globally, according to Forbes’ 2025 World’s Billionaire List. However, his three children—Jennifer, 28, Rory, 25, and Phoebe, 22, whom he shares with ex-wife Melinda French Gates—will inherit only a small fraction of this wealth, less than 1 percent. Despite this, each child is still set to receive over $1 billion. Gates emphasized that leaving his children an enormous inheritance would not benefit them.
“In my case, my kids got a great upbringing and education, but [they will get] less than 1 percent of the total wealth, because I decided it wouldn’t be a favor to them,” he said, per PEOPLE. Gates wants his children to forge their paths without being overshadowed by his success.
“It’s not a dynasty. I’m not asking them to run Microsoft,” Gates explained, adding, “I wanna give them a chance to have their own earnings and success, be significant and not overshadowed by the incredible luck and good fortune I had.”

The billionaire has long committed to philanthropy, pledging to donate the majority of his wealth to The Gates Foundation, which he co-founded in 2000. Gates currently donates approximately $9 billion annually and aims to give away enough to eventually fall off the list of the world’s richest individuals.
“I have an obligation to return my resources to society in ways that have the greatest impact for reducing suffering and improving lives,” he wrote on X.
Gates believes his children understand his philosophy of prioritizing societal needs over personal wealth accumulation.
