*Donna Motsinger has been awarded $19.2 million in her civil lawsuit against Bill Cosby over alleged sexual abuse that took place in 1972.
The case, filed in 2023 in Los Angeles County Superior Court in Santa Monica, alleges that Cosby sexually assaulted Motsinger, a server he met at a Northern California restaurant more than five decades ago. Punitive damages in the case are still pending, NBC News reports.
According to the complaint, Cosby, 88, offered Motsinger medication he represented as aspirin, causing her to repeatedly lose consciousness. Her next memory was waking the following morning in her home, stripped down to her underwear. The lawsuit classifies the actions as sexual battery and details the lasting impact of the alleged abuse more than 50 years later.
“This verdict is not just about me — it’s about finally being heard and holding Mr. Cosby accountable,” Motsinger said in a statement via her attorneys. “I have carried the weight of what happened to me for more than 50 years. It never goes away. Today, a jury saw the truth and held him accountable. That means everything. I hope this gives strength to other survivors who are still waiting for their moment to be heard.”
The verdict comes as prior statements from Cosby continues to draw scrutiny. EUR previously reported that Cosby gave explosive testimony under oath regarding his acquisition of sedatives in the early 1970s. According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, the comedian admitted to obtaining a Quaalude prescription and renewing it seven times, with the stated intention of giving the drug to women he was pursuing sexually. Cosby maintained throughout his deposition that he never personally used the drug himself.
A former representative for Cosby said the verdict sets a dangerous precedent “to allow decade-old allegations, presented without evidence or proof, to stand.”
This civil case follows Cosby’s high-profile criminal proceedings in Pennsylvania. In 2018, he was found guilty on three felony counts of aggravated indecent assault for allegedly drugging and assaulting Andrea Constand in 2004. That conviction was overturned in 2021 when the Pennsylvania Supreme Court vacated his sentence, ruling he had been denied protection against self-incrimination.
Throughout both the Pennsylvania case and the current civil proceedings, Cosby has maintained his innocence, stating he never “changed my stance or my story.”
