*A banana can serve a different purpose depending on when you eat it. Smart timing can fuel a workout, support digestion, or help keep portions in check, according to Very Well Living.
Breakfast is a natural place to start. Strip away the water, and about 80% of a banana is carbohydrate, which the body quickly turns into usable sugar. Another one in the late afternoon can lift you out of that post-lunch fog.
Before exercise, eat one 15 to 30 minutes ahead so its carbs have time to reach your bloodstream. Research on cyclists found that bananas eaten before or during a ride improved speed and recovery more than plain water. Afterward, the fruit helps restore the nutrients and electrolytes a workout sweats out.
If weight loss is the goal, try a banana half an hour before lunch or dinner. Its fiber helps you feel satisfied sooner, making it easier to avoid overeating. At 105 calories, a medium banana also makes a light snack. Greener bananas carry extra fiber, which may help even more.

Digestion gets a lift any time, though a banana works especially well alongside a meal. Each medium fruit delivers about 3 grams of fiber, close to 11% of the daily value. Unripe bananas also contain resistant starch, which nourishes beneficial gut microbes.
Evenings are fair game, too. Ayurvedic tradition discourages bananas at night, but science hasn’t backed up that warning. The fruit’s magnesium, tryptophan, and vitamin B6 are actually linked to better sleep. People on high-dose vitamin B12 may also benefit, since the supplement can lower potassium and a banana packs 422 milligrams.
A few cautions apply. Eating several ripe bananas in one sitting, especially on an empty stomach, can spike blood sugar. People with diabetes may need to cut back. Those with moderate or severe kidney disease should ask a provider about safe amounts because of the potassium. Migraine sufferers may want to stay under half a cup a day, and anyone with an allergy should skip them.
