*Nine days after Berry LeMar Henderson lost his life following a violent confrontation in Hollywood, his family says they are still trying to make sense of a tragedy that forever changed their lives.
This evening (05-29-26) at 6pm Pacific, relatives, friends, community members, and civil rights leaders will gather outside Tattoo Doctors at 6700 Hollywood Blvd. for a candlelight vigil and press conference to honor Henderson’s life and renew calls for justice. (Scroll down for video of the incident, released by the family.)
The gathering comes as investigators continue searching for a fourth suspect connected to the May 20 incident near Hollywood Boulevard and Las Palmas Avenue. Three suspects have already been arrested, but Henderson’s family says their fight for answers is far from over.
For those who knew him best, the story is not defined by police reports or headlines. It is about a beloved brother, son, family member and friend whose life ended far too soon.
Remembering the Man Behind the Headlines
Family members describe Henderson as a gentle giant whose calm demeanor, love of music and authentic personality left a lasting impression on everyone around him.
Relatives have also emphasized that Henderson was not homeless and say they hope the public remembers the person he was rather than assumptions that sometimes follow highly publicized incidents.
“Berry was a gentle giant, cool, calm, authentic man who enjoyed music, spending time in the city he loved, and living life in his own peaceful way,” the family said in a statement.
The loss has left a void that loved ones say cannot be measured.
“My brother was not invisible. He was not disposable. He was a human being who deserved compassion, dignity, and life. We will speak his name, we will demand the truth, and we will not rest until there is justice for Berry LeMar Henderson,” said his sister, O’Koia Nixon.

A Family Still Searching for Answers
According to police, Henderson suffered fatal injuries during a violent altercation that followed an incident involving a dog. Authorities have confirmed multiple arrests in the case while detectives continue working to locate an additional suspect.
For Henderson’s family, however, the investigation is deeply personal.
According to family members, Henderson was found injured and in distress after the attack and appeared to be struggling to breathe while awaiting medical assistance. Relatives noted that he suffered from asthma, making the situation even more critical.
Community Leaders Join the Call for Justice
Friday’s vigil will include support from civil rights activist Najee Ali, senior organizer for the Los Angeles chapter of the National Action Network.
Ali is expected to join the family in calling for answers and urging anyone with information about the case to cooperate with investigators.
Family members say numerous witnesses were present when the violence unfolded, and they remain hopeful that additional information could help investigators complete the case. They believe community cooperation may prove essential in bringing full accountability for Henderson’s death.
“It’s critical that the community help share information to help bring justice for Berry,” organizers said ahead of the event.

Support Continues to Grow
As the family prepares to honor Henderson’s memory, supporters across Los Angeles have rallied around them.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with funeral expenses and help ease some of the financial burdens created by the tragedy. Friends, family members and supporters have continued sharing information about the case while encouraging others to attend the vigil and support the family’s call for justice.
For many, the outpouring of support reflects the impact Henderson had on those who knew him and the community’s determination to stand with his loved ones during an unimaginably difficult time.
Refusing to Let His Memory Fade
As candles are lit Friday evening, Henderson’s family hopes the gathering will accomplish more than remembrance. They hope it encourages witnesses to come forward, keeps public attention focused on the investigation and ensures that Berry’s name is never forgotten.
For Nixon, that mission remains clear.
“Let the City of Los Angeles hear this clearly: Berry LeMar Henderson mattered. His life mattered. And his death will not be ignored, buried, or forgotten.”
