According to the New York Post, the decision follows a deadly shooting at an ICE facility in Dallas and a rise in violent protests targeting federal immigration authorities. “We created the App Store to be a safe and trusted place to discover apps,” Apple said in a statement. The company added, “Based on information we’ve received from law enforcement about the safety risks associated with ICEBlock, we have removed it and similar apps from the App Store.”
ICEBlock gathered crowdsourced reports of ICE officer sightings, notifying users of nearby enforcement activities. Its website noted that the app intended to “empower communities to stay informed about ICE presence within a 5-mile radius while maintaining their anonymity through real-time updates and automatic deletion of sightings after four hours.” The slogan was “See something, tap something.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that the Justice Department had pushed Apple to act. “We reached out to Apple today demanding they remove the ICEBlock app from their App Store — and Apple did so,” Bondi said. She added, “ICEBlock is designed to put ICE agents at risk just for doing their jobs, and violence against law enforcement is an intolerable red line that cannot be crossed.”
ICEBlock creator Joshua Aaron criticized Apple’s decision, saying he was “incredibly disappointed.” He argued, “Capitulating to an authoritarian regime is never the right move,” and claimed it is “patently false” that Apple “received information from law enforcement that ICEBlock served to harm law enforcement officers.”
The controversy deepened when Aaron’s wife, Carolyn Feinstein, a Department of Justice forensic accountant, said she was fired in retaliation for his app. “This was retribution. I was fired because of the actions, or activism, of my husband,” she said.
A DOJ spokesperson confirmed the department had been investigating her ties to the app, stating that “ICEBlock is an app that illegal aliens use to evade capture while endangering the lives of ICE officers.” Feinstein maintained, “It is insulting to me because I dedicated myself and my career to serving the people of the United States, and now the DOJ is claiming I was attempting to harm some of them. And that’s not true.”
