“Anora” emerged as the biggest at the 2025 Academy Awards. The Sean Baker-directed film claimed five awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, while Mikey Madison secured Best Actress.
The film centers on a young sex worker from Brooklyn who marries the son of a Russian oligarch. During her acceptance speech, Madison honored sex workers, saying: “I want to again recognize and honor the sex worker community. I will continue to support and be an ally. The women that I’ve had the privilege of meeting from that community have been one of the highlights of this entire incredible experience.”
Despite leading with 11 nominations, “Emilia Perez” only took home two awards—Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña and Best Original Song for El Mal. Meanwhile, “The Brutalist” won three, including Best Actor for Adrien Brody, alongside Best Cinematography and Best Original Score. “Wicked” triumphed in Production and Costume Design, while “Dune: Part Two” dominated Sound and Visual Effects.
During Saldaña’s acceptance speech, she celebrated being a child of immigrant parents and noted that she’s the first American of Dominican origin to win an Oscar. Watch the moment via the YouTube clip above.
The night also featured a tribute to the late Gene Hackman, and host Conan O’Brien made waves with his sharp remarks about Kendrick Lamar.
“We’re halfway through the show, which means it’s time for Kendrick Lamar to come out and call Drake a pedophile,” O’Brien joked, referring to the lyric in Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us.
