*CNN anchor Abby Phillip has earned praise from viewers for correcting a panelist who made an inaccurate statement during a broadcast. The incident occurred on January 6 during an episode of CNN NewsNight that featured discussions about recent geopolitical developments.
According to The Mirror, the program’s panel was debating multiple topics, including US military actions in Venezuela, when journalist Lydia Moynihan stated that China maintains bases in Greenland. The assertion prompted immediate pushback from Phillip, who quickly intervened to set the record straight.
“Whoa, China does not have bases in Greenland. We have bases in Greenland,” Phillip stated. When panelists attempted to speak over her, the host reasserted control of the conversation with further clarification.
“I actually think it’s important. What Trump said about the Chinese, what Trump said in that clip, he said there are Chinese and Russian ships surrounding Greenland. That is completely false. That’s not true,” Phillip explained. She noted that expanding American military presence there remains an option, adding, “We could increase the number of bases, if we wanted, in Greenland. We could do that tomorrow if we wanted.”
Phillip then connected the discussion to broader concerns about natural resources. “These are all things that are on the table, but it really raises some questions of whether that is even the thing, because ultimately, just like in Venezuela, which we’ll get to in the next segment, this seems to also be about the natural resources that Greenland has that Trump wants,” she said.
The anchor referenced CNN reporting about resource interests, noting how “a source familiar with the matter” discussed “untapped resources in Greenland, including the rare earths.”
Phillip concluded by suggesting the situation reflects “Trump’s desire, not just in Greenland, but in Venezuela and Ukraine, to tap into natural resources that are in other countries, even if that means taking it by force.”
Social media users applauded Phillip’s handling of the misinformation, with many expressing appreciation for her fact-checking in real time.
