*As Shilo Sanders begins his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his personal life, especially his relationship with his parents, is drawing renewed attention.
The son of Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders, Shilo has sparked discussion by expressing deep loyalty to his mother, Pilar Sanders, amid long-standing family tensions. According to MACRA, Shilo has publicly emphasized his close bond with Pilar, signaling emotional distance from his father. These comments come years after his parents’ contentious 2013 divorce, in which Pilar lost custody of Shilo and his siblings—Shedeur and Shelomi—following a bitter court battle. Despite the outcome, Pilar maintained a role in their lives through visitation and continued support.
In a recent livestream, Shilo reflected on missing his mother since relocating to Tampa Bay. “It’s pretty different not having her close by because, in Colorado, she lived right across the street to come to help me if I needed some good cooking,” he said. “If I needed help with anything. You know she’s right across the street, but now that everybody’s moved, I don’t know. I don’t have my mom across the street anymore.”
When asked about missing family in general, he added, “I’m not gonna lie, I like being away from family right now.” Still, he made a point to say he misses his mother the most, noticeably omitting his father and fueling speculation of ongoing tension.
Shilo has also defended Pilar’s influence on his life. During a family conversation, Pilar joked, “I don’t get any credit for making you,” to which Shilo firmly responded, “I stand up for my mother.”

This public alignment with Pilar stands in contrast to Shilo’s typically lighthearted and visible relationship with Deion, often highlighted in social media posts filled with playful banter and father-son moments.
The family’s strained dynamics were also on display during Colorado’s 2024 Senior Day, when Shilo and Shedeur attempted to create a moment of unity between their parents. The plan faltered when Deion appeared to avoid Pilar. Reflecting on the moment, Shilo remarked, “That’s like World War III trying them (Deion and Pilar) to get to walk together,” pointing to the deep divide.
Adding another layer, Shilo’s brother Shedeur, drafted by the Cleveland Browns, recently revealed that he had barely spoken to their father since moving to Ohio.
Though Deion played a key role in Shilo’s development as a player, coaching him at both Jackson State and Colorado, Shilo’s loyalty to Pilar is shaping how he navigates life in the NFL. He’s also dealing with significant off-field challenges, including a three-year, $2.96 million deal with the Buccaneers, ongoing legal issues, and a bankruptcy case involving subpoenas connected to an $11 million debt from a 2015 incident with a former school security guard.
