Kamala Harris Leaning Toward 2026 California Governor Run
*Kamala Harris is seriously considering running for governor of California in 2026, according to several sources close to the former vice president. While she has not made a final decision, those in her circle say she’s energized by the idea and sees it as a new chapter in her public service career.
“She has a lot of people in her ear telling her that it makes the most sense and she can do the most good,” one source told The Hill. Another added, “There’s a glimmer in her eyes again.”
Still, some insiders insist she hasn’t made up her mind, noting the upcoming election and intense chatter are driving the speculation.
Harris is said to be sticking to a self-imposed end-of-summer deadline for a decision.

A Crowded Race With Familiar Names Already Emerging
The 2026 governor’s race is already heating up, with big names like former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and former California Attorney General Xavier Becerra among the top contenders. If Harris joins, she’d enter the race with near-universal name recognition and strong polling.
An April Emerson College poll showed 50% of California Democrats would back her in a gubernatorial run. Another survey by Politico/UC Berkeley found 33% would be “joyful” and 41% “mostly excited” about her candidacy.
Still, strategist Garry South cautioned, “She doesn’t come into this as an 800-pound gorilla… There are real mixed feelings about her among California Democrats.”
Harris Faces Criticism Over Absence From California Issues
Despite her name recognition, Harris’s absence from key events in California has raised concerns. While wildfires and ICE raids dominated headlines this year, her response has largely been limited to posts on X (formerly Twitter).
Critics point out she attended high-profile events like the Hamptons wedding of Huma Abedin and Alex Soros and a gala in San Francisco without addressing local political issues. She’s also spent significant time out of state and abroad since leaving office.
Halting Momentum After a Painful Presidential Defeat
Harris’s consideration of the governor’s race comes after a tough loss in the 2024 presidential election, which many thought she had a chance to win. That defeat, and her limited visibility since, have sparked doubts about her next move.
Some Democratic insiders view a gubernatorial run as a “consolation prize.” But her team dismisses that notion, saying she’s focused on public service, not political optics.
Still, if she runs, political observers believe she’ll be forced to promise not to run for president in 2028. “I don’t think she could, with a straight face, run for governor… without pledging that,” said strategist Garry South.
Villaraigosa and GOP Opponents Already Targeting Her Record
Antonio Villaraigosa, a potential opponent, has already criticized Harris and Becerra over what he calls their silence about President Biden’s cognitive decline during the 2024 campaign.
“Voters deserve to know the truth—what did Kamala Harris and Xavier Becerra know, when did they know it, and why didn’t either of them speak out? This cover-up directly led to a second Donald Trump term,” Villaraigosa posted on X last month.
This narrative could become a campaign issue and complicate Harris’s effort to reshape her image as a state-focused leader ready to take on tough California issues.
AI, Youth, and Harris’s Current Areas of Focus
Despite her recent low profile in the state, Harris has been in deep discussions about artificial intelligence and youth issues, according to her circle. She’s participated in conferences and student forums from Las Vegas to Maryland and Australia in recent months.
Harris has expressed concern over the Trump administration’s immigration policies and use of the National Guard in Los Angeles, saying: “Deploying the National Guard is a dangerous escalation meant to provoke chaos.”
Her defenders say she’s still deeply engaged and that her potential gubernatorial run could reintroduce her as a fierce advocate for California’s most pressing issues.

Will Harris Reintroduce Herself to California in Time?
As the summer unfolds, all eyes will be on Kamala Harris. Her next steps could reshape California’s political landscape and possibly her future ambitions.
While she is seen as a front-runner, a successful run may depend on reconnecting with voters in her home state. Observers believe this summer could be her chance to make that happen—or miss the moment altogether.
“This moment almost requires her to do it,” a confidant said. Whether she will remains to be seen.
