*Beyoncé came under fire after opening night of the Cowboy Carter tour at Los Angeles SoFi Stadium, where she performed “The Star-Spangled Banner,” a move that ignited fierce debate across social media.
Many fans criticized the anthem performance as “tone-deaf,” especially in light of current political tensions and global issues. As RadarOnline reports, one disgruntled commenter wrote, “No shade, but with everything going on in our country right now this feels like the last song we should be singing.” Another added, “Singing the national anthem while our country commits atrocity after atrocity… disgusting actually.”
Critics tied the patriotic moment to the broader aesthetic of Cowboy Carter, which leans heavily into American iconography. “Going on a tour using Americana aesthetics especially during a time like this… tone deaf as f— or she literally just doesn’t care,” one user commented. A few even went so far as to demand partial refunds, citing the anthem as offensive or inappropriate.
Amid the polarized reactions, a heartfelt highlight softened the night: Beyoncé brought her daughters Rumi, 7, and Blue Ivy, 13, onstage, an unexpected family moment that delighted longtime fans.
Ticket sales have also sparked conversation. Despite Beyoncé’s massive fanbase and her historic Grammy win for Album of the Year, the opening show reportedly had over 3,000 unsold seats, according to Ticketmaster data. Criticism over steep ticket prices began earlier this year, but recent resale listings revealed prices dipping as low as $20 for upper-level seats, prompting online jokes and speculation about a “flop” tour.

Still, Live Nation pushed back against those claims, stating the Cowboy Carter tour is 94% sold out across all stops.
The tour continues across the U.S. and Europe, wrapping up in Las Vegas on July 26.
