*Tina Knowles, mother of global superstar Beyoncé, is pulling back the curtain on one of the most painful chapters of her life in her new memoir, “Matriarch,” set to be released on April 22.
In the deeply personal book, Knowles reflects on everything from motherhood and Black identity to the harsh realities of life in the public eye. But one experience stands out as particularly scarring: the conspiracy theory that Beyoncé faked her pregnancy with Blue Ivy.
Back in 2011, Beyoncé’s pregnancy was clouded by a wave of cruel online speculation sparked by a video that suggested the singer was wearing a prosthetic belly. The bizarre and unfounded rumor snowballed, with some insisting Beyoncé never gave birth to Blue Ivy at all.
Knowles tells PEOPLE that it was “one of the worst times of my life.” She added, “My family is so precious to me and babies are so sacred. So to hear people say the most horrendous things and call my whole family a lie… that we would all have to be part of that conspiracy and lie about something so sacred.”
Even though Knowles wanted to speak out, her daughter urged her to stay silent to avoid feeding the story further. “But it didn’t go away for a long time,” she says. “It’s one of the most painful things for me, that people could be that disgusting.”

Knowles says the most difficult part of fame “is that people feel they can dog you out any kind of way and you’re not supposed to get upset. But we’re still humans, and it hurts.”
In “Matriarch,” Knowles doesn’t shy away from the hard truths. While the book celebrates strength, legacy, and the wisdom passed between generations of women, it also doesn’t sugarcoat her experiences.
“It was very carefully written,” she says. “But then it was like, this doesn’t even make sense because there’s only, you know, all the positive stuff. And there was a lot of positivity. But it’s my story. It’s just the truth.”
Beyoncé has expressed her pride, posting the book’s cover with a touching message: “Mama, I couldn’t be prouder. My love for you goes beyond what I can say… But please don’t spill too much Mama Tea.” Solange, too, showed her support, reposting the book announcement with rose emojis.
Ms. Tina is hitting the road this spring to promote the book. Check out the tour dates via the Instagram post below.
