*Teyana Taylor’s divorce from her estranged husband Iman Shumpert entered a new phase with the former basketball star denying Taylor’s claim he is irresponsible with their daughters.
Radar Online referenced court documents detailing the situation surrounding Taylor’s divorce petition. In the documents, the singer/actor claimed “blatantly and knowingly false statements” are contained in Shumpert’s answer to the petition.
Taylor is demanding primary custody and child support of the couple’s two daughters, Junie and Rue. Among the revelations revealed are claims the daughters “appear to be disheveled” and “are not fed properly” while in Shumpert’s care. According to her, the former sports star has a “reckless disregard for the safety and well-being” of Junie and Rue by not being “attentive to their needs.
“[Shumpert] asks for significant time with the parties’ minor children, but then leaves them with his parents or others for a majority of the time requested. [Shumpert’s] interest in the parties’ daughter is more like his chance for photo opportunities as opposed to [Shumpert] providing true parenting and care for the girls. [Taylor] further shows the Court that when [Shumpert] gets angry, he is irresponsible with the girls,” the petition read.
Taylor goes on to claim Shumpert moved into “one of the parties’ fully renovated, turnkey homes while leaving” her and their kids “in the parties’ primary residence that has been under construction for the past three (3) years because the Respondent has failed to pay for his portion of the agreed upon renovations.” The move into the turnkey home came after Shumpert moved out of his marital home with Taylor, the singer claimed.
In his response to Taylor’s divorce, Shumpert denied being irresponsible with their while disputing the notion of the children’s best interest lying in living primarily with their mother, Radar noted.
Regarding his residential status, Shumpert admitted that although he moved into a separate home, the property was solely his and not community property. The athlete agreed with child support being paid but requested that no spousal support be awarded to Taylor.
Taylor fired back at Shumpert’s claim about his parenting in her new motion.
“By way of further response, [Taylor] states that [Shumpert’s] adulterous and illegal conduct is publicized on numerous news outlets and in Court documents,” the motion read. “Furthermore, [Shumpert] consistently fails to properly care for the minor children including but not limited to failing to feed them despite being in the Martial Residence with the minor children, smoking marijuana, and being under the influence while caring for the minor children, and placing the minor children in a rideshare in Chicago which resulted in the minor children being dropped off at the United Center in the general population while he utilized the services of a private driver. [Shumpert] consistently demonstrates a clear disregard for the safety of the minor children.”
Taylor further stated that the home Shumpert moved into recently is community property. The entertainer’s reasoning stems from numerous upgrades she and her parents made to the home that increased its value. Before moving into the currently under-construction marital home, Taylor claimed to have lived in the home Shumpert occupies.
Taylor’s claims of Shumpert’s parenting under the influence are the latest development to come out of the divorce proceedings. In January 2023, she filed for divorce from Shumpert, under accusations of the former NBA standout being an incredibly jealous partner who often picked fights with her.
Although the couple agreed to pause the split months after the divorce was filed and try marriage counseling, they found themselves back in court when their efforts to reconcile failed.
