*Sanaa Lathan will star in and executive produce a drama series about the infamous “psychic” Miss Cleo.
We reported previously that the late Miss Cleo, whose real name was Youree Harris, and her psychic hotline were quite a sensation in the 1990s.
Miss Cleo called herself a voodoo priestess and regularly appeared on the Psychic Readers Network, where she gained a cult following. She became especially famous for her trademark line “Call me now!” which she uttered with a Jamaican accent.
The owners of the Psychic Readers Network were, in 2002, charged by the Federal Trade Commission with defrauding customers who called the company’s 1-900 numbers for paid psychic readings.
After the Psychic Readers Network closed shop, Cleo bounced around to various jobs … including voicing a character in the video game, “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.”
She died in 2016 at age 53 after a long battle with cancer.
In 2022, HBO released a documentary titled “Call Me Miss Cleo,” which chronicles her “rise, fall, and reinvention.”
HBO Max’s official description of the doc states, “The film explores the many layers behind a complicated and charismatic figure. Revisiting an era of corded phones and 1-900-numbers, ‘Call Me Miss Cleo’ ultimately reveals the truth behind the ever-enigmatic woman who took TV by storm, only to abruptly disappear from public consciousness.”
Meanwhile, Lathan has teamed with Legendary Entertainment to develop a new dark comedy-drama series about Miss Cleo.
Per Deadline, the series “will explore how her infamous rise gave way to a contentious court case by the government involving upwards of $500M,” the outlet writes.
